We undertook a project for an existing client to design an extension to a small brasserie in Berkhampsted. The project involved the demolition of an existing load-to-building and some out buildings and replacing them with a substantial two-storey extension to the end of the existing end-terrace property. Due to tight planning restrictions and the restrictive nature of the existing site, the aesthetic of the extension has been designed to replicate the existing building. However, once inside the extended envelope we had proposed a contemporary, open-plan layout to make the restaurant feel as spacious as possible. The entrance lobby opens out into the main bar and open-kitchen area, with a large seating area situated in the existing section of the building beyond. The new mezzanine first floor level is accessed via a new purpose made steel and glass staircase. On this level there are toilet facilities and additional seating spaces, with void overlooking the diners and bar users below. The open mezzanine floor enhances the flow of light and more importantly the aroma from the kitchen to flood through the building.
We have also allowed for the future expansion of the first floor by indicating a prime location for the construction of a bridge to access the adjacent office space which may become available for use in the future.
